Introduction to TCAD – Device Theory Put into Practice

TCAD process and device simulation is a powerful 2D and 3D modeling tool used widely by engineers to explore the manufacturing, design and operation of semiconductor devices. Modern TCAD is used in a wide array of applications: CMOS, Power/RF Devices, Optoelectronics/Photonics, Sensor and Display design, and MEMS.

However, TCAD is a challenging skill to learn and master. TCAD combines complex semiconductor device physics with numerical methods to solve difficult problems. The benefit of TCAD is that these types of difficult problems are often too complex for engineers to calculate via their own analytical methods, or alternatively difficult, costly or impossible to measure empirically in the lab.

In this webinar Silvaco hosts an esteemed guest lecturer, Dr. Hugh Barnaby, Professor EECE at Arizona State University. In this webinar attendees will be given an overview of Silvaco TCAD, and Dr. Barnaby will provide his perspective on utilizing TCAD efficiently and effectively as part of learning semiconductor device physics, as well as adopting TCAD as part of an engineer’s toolbox to explore and design new technologies with physics-based modeling.

Presenter

Dr. Hugh Barnaby joined the ASU faculty in 2004. His primary research focuses on the analysis, modeling and experimental characterization of extreme environment effects in semiconductor materials, devices and integrated circuits. As part of this research, he also develops design and processing techniques that enable the reliable operation of electronics in these environments.

In addition, Barnaby has ongoing research activities in wireless (RF and optical) IC and data converter design, radiation-enabled compact modeling, and memristor technologies and applications. He has been an active researcher in the microelectronics field for 18 years in both industry and academics, presenting and publishing more than 100 papers during this time.

Dr. Garrett Schlenvogt is a Senior Applications Engineer within the Silvaco TCAD division, based out of Silvaco’s east coast sales/support office in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts. He has been with Silvaco for 5 years, with responsibilities including presales and support of Silvaco TCAD customers for a wide variety of applications including: Advanced CMOS, Display Technologies, Sensors and Power/RF devices. Additionally, Garrett has lead multiple research proposals and collaborations for Silvaco, working with both academic and commercial institutions. Prior to joining Silvaco, he was a research assistance at Arizona State University, with research focused on reliability simulation and modeling of CMOS technologies for harsh environments.

Dr. Schlenvogt holds a BSE, MS, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.
