Circuit Rubberband: real-time circuit tuning in SmartSpice

Change a model or device parameter and watch the waveforms answer, so you settle the value in one sitting, not one rerun at a time.

What Circuit Rubberband does

Circuit Rubberband is the real-time circuit tuning feature of SmartSpice. Pick any mix of model and device instance parameters and move them while SmartView redraws the waveforms, without rerunning the simulation from the start. You drive it from the SmartSpice interface or from the Gateway schematic editor. That means fewer blind reruns, and fewer open questions carried into verification.

How it is used

Without it, sizing a circuit runs as edit, simulate, check the plot, repeat.

Where you sit

Real-time circuit tuning happens where you already work: in Gateway or the SmartSpice interface, with SmartView open beside it. Step down the device and model tree to the value you want, and debug as you go.

What you change

Model parameters, device instance parameters, or several of each at once. On a circuit, that usually means Rs and Cs pushed against a target like bandwidth versus gain. On a power device, it means transient parameters fitted to time-based data: gate charge, the Miller plateau, and reverse recovery time and charge.

What updates

The waveforms in SmartView, as each value moves. When a setup lands where you want it, save it and reuse it on the next circuit. The SmartSpice Rubberband examples run it on filters, amplifiers, oscillators, LC delay lines, transient noise, FFT and jitter.

Requires

SmartSpice, started from its own interface or from a Gateway schematic.

Results in

SmartView, which shows each change the moment you make it.

Circuit Rubberband questions

Is Circuit Rubberband a separate product?

No. It's a feature of SmartSpice that you can also run from Gateway, not a simulator of its own.

Yes. Rubberband runs inside SmartSpice whichever way you start it, and the updated waveforms appear in SmartView. Plan on SmartSpice and SmartView as the minimum set.

Whatever you reach through the device and model hierarchy: model parameters and device instance parameters, singly or together. In practice that covers component values such as resistors and capacitors, and transient model parameters such as gate charge and reverse recovery.

SmartSpice

The SPICE simulator Rubberband runs in. It works with your HSPICE or Spectre models and netlists, and adds built-in optimization and Verilog-A.

SmartView

Waveform viewing and analysis, live while you tune.
