Every software package contains a full set of examples suitable for that version and are installed with the software. If you see examples here that are not in your installation you should consider updating to a later version of the software. These examples can be used by beginners and advanced users for product evaluation, teaching purposes, and self-training.

This example demonstrates:
How to define a 2D Gaussian intensity profile
This example shows an added capability of Optical where, instead of a uniform beam intensity applied to the surface of the silicon, a Gaussian profile for the beam intensity can be defined.
The definition of the beam is now:
BEAM number=1 x.origin=2.5 y.origin=-2.0 angle=90.0 wavelength=0.623 rays=151 x.gaussian mean=0 xsigma=0.25 save.rays
The additional parameters are x.gaussian, mean and xsigma. The GAUSSIAN parameter defines that the intensity distribution is a gaussian, MEAN specifies the location of a mean value of the Gaussian source in the X direction related to the beam coordinate system, and xsigma specifies the standard deviation in the X direction of the beam coordinate system.
We recommend that the RAYS parameter is set to a large number as the spacing between rays is always a constant (width of the beam / RAYS) so in order to obtain a smooth gaussian profile a large number of rays may be necessary.
