This makes edge parasitic capacitance effects more dominant than plate capacitance.<\/p>\n<p>In a multi-body system, neighboring conductors may capture some or all of the electrical fields lines emanating from a particular conductor. These field lines would otherwise terminate else where. This phenomenon is called charge sharing, which plays an important role in modeling parasitic capacitances.<\/p>\n<p>This article presents new approaches to dealing with charge sharing and vertical shielding in Silvaco\u2019s parasitic capacitance extraction tool,\u00a0<strong><em>Hipex-C<\/em><\/strong>. The three main commands in\u00a0<strong><em>Hipex-C<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">FRINGE<\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">LATERAL<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">AREA<\/span>, cover all of the capacitance calculation requirements that one would expect from a industry leading capacitance extraction tool.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">FRINGE<\/span>\u00a0enables edge-to-body,\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">LATERAL<\/span>\u00a0enables edge-to-edge and\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">AREA<\/span>\u00a0enables plate capacitance modeling.<br \/>\nAll the commands allow one to specify different capacitance coefficients for different vertical configurations of the primary layers to account for charge sharing effects. The layers above or below or both the primary conductor(s) define the vertical configuration.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"feature\">Vertical Shielding<\/h3>\n<p>Vertical shielding is caused by the vertical order of layers. When more than two conduction layers overlap, the inside layers shield the capacitance effects between the outer layers, Figure 2. demonstrates the effects of vertical shielding.<br \/>\nNote the following vertical shielding effects for primary layers\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">metal2<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">poly<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"regular\">\n<li>The first\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">metal1<\/span>\u00a0shape is shielding the\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">metal2<\/span>\u00a0edge from the edge of the first\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">poly<\/span>\u00a0shape (lateral C1) and the body of the second\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">poly<\/span>\u00a0shape (fringe C2)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"regular\">\n<li>The second\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">metal1<\/span>\u00a0shape is shielding the edge of the third poly shape from the\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">metal2<\/span>\u00a0body (fringe C4) and the bodies of the\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">metal2<\/span>\u00a0shape and the fourth\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">poly<\/span>\u00a0shape from each other (area C5)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For lateral capacitance, a primary layer shape can shield another primary layer shape:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"regular\">\n<li>The third\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">poly<\/span>\u00a0shape is shielding the edges of the second and fourth\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">poly<\/span>\u00a0shapes from each other (lateral C7)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"regular\">\n<li>The fourth\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">poly<\/span>\u00a0shape is shielding the\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">metal1<\/span>\u00a0edge from the edge of the fifth\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, mono;\">poly<\/span>\u00a0shape (lateral C6)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><div class='av-flex-placeholder'><\/div><div class=\"flex_column av_one_fourth  flex_column_table_cell av-equal-height-column av-align-top av-zero-column-padding   avia-builder-el-3  el_after_av_three_fourth  avia-builder-el-last  \" style='border-radius:0px;
